UCI Road World Championships 2017
When the UCI Road World Championships came to Bergen in 2017, the whole city joined in. We were responsible for all the cultural production on Torgallmenningen throughout the nine days of the championships – the opening and closing ceremonies, the medal ceremonies and a new programme on stage every day. An estimated 52,000 people took part in what happened on the square.
The opening ceremony was held on a Saturday afternoon in brilliant sunshine, in front of a seething sea of people, with Lars Vaular, Spindel, Kjetil Møster and Fargespill on stage. Terje Isungset and Miss Tati closed the championships.
In between, we filled Torgallmenningen with concerts: Jan Eggum, Sigrid Moldestad, Ausekarane, BIT20 Ensemble, the Royal Norwegian Navy Band and a big sing-along concert with Tor Endresen, Ove Thue and Christine Guldbrandsen, among others – plus evenings with 9 Grader Nord, Dårlig Vane, Boy Pablo, TØFL, Razika and Real Ones.
We were also responsible for the VIP tent at Festplassen, including the arrangements for visits from guests such as HRH Crown Prince Haakon, and for planning and setting up the big screen in Byparken.
Staging events in the middle of the city centre, open to all and with thousands of people every day, takes careful planning of sound, safety and crowd flow. It is exactly the kind of assignment we like best.
